Excel & CSV to Markdown
Client-Side ParserWhat is Excel to Markdown conversion?
Excel to Markdown conversion turns a spreadsheet range or workbook into a plain-text Markdown table. Each spreadsheet row becomes a table row, columns are separated with pipes (|), and a separator row of dashes defines the header — the GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) table format. The result is readable as text and renders as a formatted table on GitHub, GitLab, and most documentation platforms.
How to convert Excel to Markdown
There are three simple workflows:
- Direct copy-paste: Highlight a cell range in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or Apple Numbers, press
Ctrl+C/Cmd+C, and paste into the converter above. Tab-separated clipboard data is auto-detected and converted instantly. - Workbook upload: Click Upload file and select any
.xlsxor.xlsworkbook. The file is parsed in your browser without uploading to any server — use the sheet switcher to pick which worksheet to convert. - Round-trip conversion: Need to copy a Markdown table back to Excel? Use the Copy to Excel button to export the table straight to tab-separated clipboard format.
Supported Excel formats and multiple worksheets
Both modern .xlsx and legacy .xls workbooks are supported. Multi-sheet workbooks are detected automatically: pick any worksheet from the sheet switcher and its Markdown table renders immediately. Cell contents, currency symbols, and numbers are preserved as text. If you work in Excel Online, Office 365, Google Sheets, or Apple Numbers, simply copy and paste — clipboard data arrives as TSV and converts without an upload step.
Markdown table output: pipes, empty cells and line breaks
Real spreadsheets are messy, so the converter normalizes the output to keep every table valid:
- Pipe characters inside a cell are escaped as
\|so Markdown renderers do not split the cell into extra columns. - Empty cells are padded so every row matches the widest row — no shifted columns.
- Line breaks inside a cell become
<br>tags, keeping each table row on a single line as GFM requires.
Example: Excel input to Markdown output
An Excel range like this:
Product | Qty | Price
Widget A | 10 | $99.00
Widget B | 5 | $49.50becomes this Markdown table:
| Product | Qty | Price |
|:---------|:---:|-------:|
| Widget A | 10 | $99.00 |
| Widget B | 5 | $49.50 |Using Markdown tables on GitHub, GitLab and docs
The generated output follows GitHub Flavored Markdown table syntax, ready to paste into README files, issues, pull-request discussions, GitLab wikis, and static-site documentation. Markdown tables are also a compact, unambiguous way to feed structured data to AI models — use Copy for AI for an annotated version. Working with plain-text exports instead of workbooks? Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Excel to Markdown?
Select and copy cells in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or Apple Numbers, then paste directly into the converter above. Or upload an .xlsx/.xls workbook to convert the active sheet.
Which Excel formats and worksheets are supported?
Both .xlsx and .xls workbooks are supported, including multi-sheet files — use the sheet switcher to convert any worksheet. Copy-paste also works from Excel Online, Office 365, Google Sheets, and Apple Numbers.
Can I copy Markdown tables back to Excel?
Yes. Click 'Copy to Excel' under the generated table. It copies the rows as TSV to your clipboard so you can paste directly into an Excel worksheet.
Does it support Google Sheets and Numbers?
Yes. When you copy cells in Google Sheets or Numbers, clipboard data is formatted as TSV. The converter auto-detects tab separation and produces the table immediately.
How are empty cells and line breaks handled?
Empty cells are padded so every row keeps the same column count, and line breaks inside a cell become <br> tags so the Markdown table stays valid.
Is my Excel spreadsheet uploaded to a server?
No. File parsing is executed entirely on your device using client-side JavaScript. Spreadsheet contents never leave your browser.
